William Shields Festival; Free Lunch Time Concert
05/07/2017 | St. Mary's Heritage Centre |
William Shields Festival Lunch-time Concert William Shields was famous for borrowing musical themes from his North Eastern heritage. As part of this year’s festival vocal group the Silver Shantymen will entertain you with songs of the sea. These songs are performed with vigour and lots of great choruses! You may hear a couple of songs you learned at school but those were the civilised version. This event is part of the William Shields Festival full details from www.communitymusicws.com/wm-shields-festival/

William Shields Festival Concert: Rosina
05/07/2017 | St. Mary's Heritage Centre |
The annual William Shield Festival celebrates the life and times of this great, but often forgotten, local musician and composer. His opera Rosina was first performed in 1782 and is a charming tale of country folk set in the North East. Tonight’s Soloists from Rocket Opera join the William Shield Chamber Orchestra led by Erardo Evans. The chorus includes the Gateshead Civic Centre singers and Chase Notes. This is a new arrangement by John Treherne who will direct. There will be a talk before the performance by Amelie Addison, the noted Shield scholar. Full details for this year’s festival and how to get tickets go to www.communitymusicws.com/wm-shield-festival/

Please be prepared to get messy with Papier Mache and paint, and wear suitable clothing. All materials will be provided. Suitable for ages 6+. All children under 12 must be supervised by an adult throughout. Adults are welcome to join in the fun too and help the children, but for adults wanting to make their own item, please purchase an additional ticket.

Discovering Dodds; Heritage Event
08/09/2017 | St. Mary's Heritage Centre |
Discovering Dodds ; Heritage Event St Mary’s graveyard houses a wide array of character. Ironmasters rub shoulders with mariners, gardeners, clergy and glassmakers. In 1907, a local bookseller, Edwin Dodds, decided to catalogue all the graves then in existence, taking photographs and adding family history information to many of the entries and producing two illustrated volumes. Since he did this, many graves were removed in the 1930s and others have been moved from their original position. Now with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund, these books have been digitised. Come and explore them online and in hard copy and then have a short guided tour of St Mary’s graveyard.
